Migraine Headache - Symptoms and Natural Remedies

Migraine is a neurological disorder.  There could be a variety of causes of migraine headache. Migraine headache symptoms are different from the usual tension headaches. The headache may be experienced on one side of the head. The pain may shift from one side to the other, during the attack. The pain could be mild to severe. It may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and blurred vision.  

Migraine headache symptoms may last from 30 minutes to several hours or even days. The cause of the headache is generally the expansion of the blood vessels in the head and neck.

The symptoms could include a visual disturbance which is called as aura. The impending headache could be indicated by the aura. Not all migraine headaches are accompanied by aura. In fact migraine headache without aura is more common.

There are several rarer forms of migraine headaches

  • Basilar artery migraine
  • Carotidynia
  • Opthalmoplegic migraine
  • Status migraine
  • Headache free migraine

Migraines may occur at any age. But generally they occur between the ages of ten to forty. About ten million people suffer migraine in the United States alone. More women are afflicted by migraine than men. Variety of migraine medications are available to treat the disease. Some of the migraine cures include natural remedies.

Chiropractic treatment

Chiropractic treatment offers a remedy to the problem without drugs. Studies have shown that the treatment has provided substantial relief to several patients.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is used to treat different types of chronic pain. Acupuncture may provide immediate and long lasting relief from migraine.

The treatment involves sticking needles into the acupuncture points and gently manipulating them. It helps to increase the blood flow in the tissues and dilates the blood vessels in that area.

Massage

Massage has brought relief to several patients of migraine. A well known technique called as deep tissue massage, helps to relax the muscles in the body. It gives an overall feeling of relaxation and loosens the stiffness of the muscles.

Meditation

Meditation reduces anxiety, tension and depression. Regular practice of meditation helps you to relax and provides relief.

Cold Compress

A cold compress is sometimes effective to relieve migraine. A zipper-top bag filled with ice cubes can provide immense relief.

Drink lots of water if you are suffering from migraine. Migraine some times begins with dehydration. Exercise helps to relieve migraine in certain cases.

Food allergy can also cause migraine.  If you are sensitive to certain foods or alcohol, you should avoid it.

Thanks so much for this informative article. When I'm not feeling 100%, I'm willing to try anything other than taking medication.

Migraines could be hereditary. Stress can also trigger migraine. Meditation is a very simple remedy. But relief can be expected only after some time.

Natural remedies are always better, because they rarely have any side effects. But it takes some time for them to act. I believe it can be used as a preventive measure for many diseases.
